1. Mailing List Info

1.1

What is a mailing list ?

A mailing list is basically a list of email addresses to which messages are sent. Any message sent is automatically forwarded to listed addresses. If you hit the reply button of your mail client while reading a message, your answer will again be sent to the other list members, thus creating a mail-based discussion.
If you wish to reply to a message privately make sure you overwrite the address of the list with the one you want to mail to.

1.2

How many people are on the AAE mailing list ?

In November 2000 there were about 250 people subscribed to the list. If you want to know the exact number, you can always check at the URL of this list : http://www.egroups.com/group/allabouteve. It might be a good idea to check out the eGroups page anyway - there is a file area with lots of information, you can read through an archive of older messages and sometimes vote on polls.

1.3

How do I subscribe to the list ?

The easiest way would be to send an empty message (i.e.leave the subject line and text field blank) to the following address: allabouteve-subscribe@egroups.com
And in the unlikely event that you wish to unsubscribe: allabouteve-unsubscribe@egroups.com

1.4

Ok, I'm subscribed - what should I do next ?

Once you have joined the list you might post a little introduction to the rest of us. Tell us a little about yourself, where you are living, how long you've been an AAE fan, what your favourite album is etc. There is a section reserved for list members‘ profiles on Goony's website at http://www.goony.nl/aae/mailing/index.htm. You can add your info there as well, and make sure to upload your picture, too. It will be useful to recognize you at pre-gig meetings.

1.5

How do I post a message ?

Simply write an email message to: allabouteve@egroups.com

1.6

Whom do I contact in case there is a problem ?

If you experience problems with the list, such as repeating mailer-daemons from a recipient or not seeing any mail, send a mail, stating the problem (include examples if possible) to the mediator of the group, John Schwab: allabouteve-owner@egroups.com

1.7

Are there activities outside the net, like meetings etc. ?

If you are going to a gig, check out recent postings on the list. If there are none, post one yourself. It's quite common for list members to meet at some pub before a gig, and new members are always welcome to join in.

1.8

Etiquette for this list ?

Be nice! That's basically it. :-)

Ok, you could do a few things to keep everyone‘s live easier:
Make your subject clear - use subject shortcuts like:
OT (Off topic) - if you really need to post a message that has nothing to do with AAE, put an OT: in front of your subject. Better consider if you really need to post it in the first place, though.
WTD (Wanted) - If you want to ask if someone got a spare copy of a record or anything else
(AAE related !), your subject should give a hint as well, like "WTD: TBJ on CD".

If you answer to someone else‘s post, don't quote the complete original message, only quote the stuff you are replying to. Never include peoples original attachments in your reply (including the egroups adverts).
Also, do not include attachments that are say bigger than 10K - if they are bigger, just upload them to the egroups file area.

And please: turn off your caps lock key! Besides the fact that messages in capital letters are awful to read, people will perceive your message like you were shouting at them.

2. General Questions

2.1

How many official albums have been released ?

Regular albums:
All about Eve (1988) (AAE)
Scarlet and other Stories (1989) (SAOS)
Touched by Jesus (1991) (TBJ)
Ultraviolet (1992) (UV)

Compilations:
Winter Words - Hits and Rarities (1992)
Best of AAE (1999)
(both without the band’s consent)

Live:
BBC Radio One Live in Concert (1993, recorded at Glastonbury 1989)
Fairy Light Nights (2000, recordings from AAE’s acoustic dates in Jan / Feb 2000)

For the most precise discography check out http://www.goony.nl/aae/discogrp/index.htm

2.2

Which ones of these have been deleted ?

TBJ and UV have both been deleted in Europe years ago, whereas UV is still in print in Japan. Export copies can be a bit expensive though, however, sometimes the more common European copies can still fetch even higher prices on online auction markets !
Also, all single releases on vinyl and CD are deleted.

2.3

Where can I get hold of these deleted items ?

A good idea may be to check out online markets, such as www.ebay.com, and also record fairs / second hand shops if available in your area. There are many mail order companies, often with websites, dealing in deleted items.

2.4

I have 'What kind of Fool' or 'Marthas Harbour' on CD Video. Which player do I need to play the video track ? Can I play it on my DVD ?

Cd-video is an "old" analogue format which can only be played with special laser disc players. The discs were 12" CDs and look rather odd, but are considered by some people to be superior to DVDs in terms of picture quality. The CD-Video had a lifespan of only very few years, and is not used anymore. If you still want to go for a player it is a good idea to check out http://www.ebay.com once in a while. Nowadays there is a format which sounds similar, but is something completely different, namely the Video cd. CDs in this format can be played with most recent DVD players.

2.5

Were there any side projects from the band members ?

Yes, there’s a lot of material featuring the band members that wasn’t released under All About Eve. A complete listing would demand far too much space here, check out the CandyTree page for info on solo and guest vocal projects. To name a few important releases :
- MICE, solo project from Julianne in ‘95/‘96, album “Because I Can“ and 3 singles (all
deleted)
- JULES & JIM, ongoing project of Julianne with Jean-Marc Lederman from Brussels
- SEEING STARS, album featuring Marty, Andy and Mark (limited re-release in 2000)
- THE LUCY NATION, project of Andy with Anna Nystroem from Sweden
- Marty’s solo albums (most of them deleted at present)

With Marty Willson-Piper being a member of The Church for 20 years now, it would take up far too much space alone to compile a discography of all his releases here!

3. The Eves on the Net

3.1

Where can I find AAE related info on the net ?

Basically there are two sites you might want to check out:
CandyTree (http://www.julianneregan.net)
This is the official site of the band. It's maintained by a group of fans who get their information often directly from the band members. So if you are out for the most recent news, concert reviews and info about side projects, make sure to go to CandyTree.

Goony's Site (http://www.goony.nl/aae)
Hosts a lot of material of interest to fans and collectors like photos, mpeg video clips, lyrics, guitar tabs etc. Home of the most extensive discography . The archives section contains a listing of live recordings, including a short statement about quality and a tracklisting.

Both sites also contain history sections, where you might find answers on a lot of questions on what happened in the past incl. line up changes etc.

For more AAE related sites check out the Ultimate Band list at The Ultimate Band List (UBL)

3.2

Where can I find AAE MP3z? Do people offer them on the list ?

Please dont ask for, or offer MP3's of official Eve tracks, or other possibly illegal stuff like handgrenades, body parts, curries, etc. (well, we have some real curry-pro's on the list, so go ahead with that one). Once in a while someone will post a URL for a MP3 of a live song - but in general even those are shortened in length. Julianne is giving away song snippets once in a while, and we don't want to spoil this generousity with bootlegging.

3.3

Are there any offline fanzines ?

Yes, there is indeed one. Its name is "Ink & Second Sight" and well worth checking out. Issue #1 was published in August 2000, and is now sold out. Second issue date is the end of November 2000, and 2 copies a year are planned. To reserve your copy check out the link at www.julianneregan.net or go to www.inksecondsight.co.uk .
There were three other fanzines in the past: Eden, Evezine and Evergreen - all their issues are sought after items now.

3.4

I need to get in touch with the band/Julianne. Can you give me their [email] address ?

Even if we had it, we wouldn't. Keep in mind that AAE have reformed for the mere fun of making music. There is no record company that pays their bills, so they are all active in other bands or, in Julianne‘s case, actually living an employee‘s life. It's a small wonder that they are back, and one way to make sure they stay this time around is to respect their privacy.

3.5

So does the band at least read my posts on the list ?

This is often asked in connection with suggestions for live venues. Well, the answer is yes and no at the same time. While the Eves don't actually participate actively with their own posts, they are being informed by list members regularly. In turn Julianne posts info via a list member to keep us informed about ongoing events.

3.6

Will they ever play in Scotland, Europe, The States, My Sidearm of the Galaxy ?

This might depend on their success with recent gigs, and the demand for an AAE concert in your country. So if you really want them to come to your town, it might be a good idea to go out and tell your friends that they are back. Ask your local record shop why there are no AAE albums in stock, and don't spread said albums via Napster/MP3/CD-Rs.
Keep in mind that it’s an almost impossible job for a band to go on an extensive tour without the back up of a major record company. Also remember that Julianne has a daytime job , and the guys are all active in other bands, too. So besides money time is also an important issue.
If you have to be at work on Monday 9 a.m., gigs in New York are certainly out of the question! ;-)

3.7

I've just seen an auction/listing for a video named 'All about Eve' on ebay / a mailorder list. The description doesn't give a tracklisting. Is it worth having ?

You probably saw a listing for the film of the same name. It's an old black and white movie starring Bette Davis, and has nothing in common with the Eves besides that the band‘s name originates from here, as they liked the sound of it and also the film itself. There's only one official video tape of the band‘s video clips, named Evergreen (deleted).
Same goes for photos and posters, in case of doubt contact the seller before you pay a lot for a picture of Bette Davis :)

3.8

I'm looking for a copy of TBJ / UV. Is it sensible to post a message asking for spare copies ?

Probably not. List members willing to part from any spares usually inform the list by themselves, so there is only a very small chance of success. Check out auction sites like Ebay instead, or try to find them in second hand shops or at record fairs.
If you still want to try your luck, put an WTD in front of your subject line.
If you in turn post that yuo have something to offer, send another message once the item is gone. In both cases ask people to answer to you privately, not on the list.

CD Trees

4.1

What is a CD tree ?

Generally spoken it‘s a way to distribute AAE related material via recordable CDs.
The tree works like this: One person creates the master set of CDs. These masters are copied say four times, and sent out to four other list members. These copy them again, send those copies to another set of members, thus spreading the discs ever wider. People who copy discs for others are called Branches, while those who receive them are their Leaves. Yes, this means you can be a leaf and branch at the same time, if you are located somewhere in the middle of the tree :)

CD trees are strictly non-profit! You'll have to send in your own CD-Rs for those copies plus the postage to send them back. If someone asks you for money to create your discs, please don't send any. Instead inform the person that started the tree. You'll be assigned to another branch, and the fowl leaf removed from the tree. Help us to keep bootleggers out!
Talking of bootleggers: if you can't resist the urge and actually buy from them, maybe you could offer to trade the recording with the rest of us. No use for several listmembers to spend their money on the same (often too expensive) tape.

For more info, check out the file section at http://www.egroups.com/group/allabouteve

4.2

How many CD-R trees have there been so far ?

By the end of November 2000 there have been two trees:

Remember November - Tree
A set of three CD-Rs containing the gigs at London, Nottingham and Manchester in 1999.

PHASED - Tree
Two CD-Rs so far of which one contained the Evergreen video, plus a second with TV footage etc. Also included was an offline version of Goony's website and material on the band’s acoustic shows in 2000. In fact this is kind of an ongoing project, and work on the next CD-Rs is currently in progress (Nov. 2000)

More info is provided at http://www.ultraviolet.nl/cdtree

4.3

I missed the signing up for a CD-R tree. Can I still join ?

Once the deadline for a tree has passed, its organizers usually can't allow any latecomers to join in because of the difficult organizing of a CD-R tree. There is no need for despair, though. Simply post a message on the list asking if someone is willing to accept you as another leaf. There is a good chance someone does. Maybe you can even become a branch for some other latecomers in case you have a CD burner.
